Overview
As part of my mandatory worker internship for obtaining my engineering degree, I had the opportunity to work at Lahaye, a company specializing in logistics and transport. My role as an order picker in the warehouse immersed me in the heart of stock management and distribution operations, handling a variety of products such as wines, aerosols, and pet supplies.
Goal
Discovering manual trades and understanding warehouse management.
The primary objective of this internship was to explore manual trades, particularly in logistics, and to understand the processes associated with warehouse management. I participated in all activities related to order preparation, stock management, and shipment tracking, while adhering to the safety and productivity standards specific to this sector.
Context
A logistics company at the heart of the supply chain.
Lahaye is a renowned logistics company specializing in the transport and storage of goods across various sectors, including wine and industrial products. Based in Vern-sur-Seiche, the company manages the reception, storage, and shipment of products for diverse clients, from wine merchants to retailers. My internship took place in this dynamic environment, where precision and rigor are essential to ensure efficient and quality service.
Process and Methodology
Order organization and flow optimization.
During my internship, my main tasks included order preparation, scanning items, organizing pallets, and verifying shipments. I worked with different products, optimizing the arrangement of items to ensure pallet stability during transport. In addition to logistical tasks, I had the opportunity to contribute to the after-sales service to resolve disputes related to damaged or incorrect orders. These activities helped me better understand the internal flows of the warehouse and the importance of organization in meeting customer expectations.
Challenges Faced and Solutions
Optimizing pallet management and time.
One of the major challenges was managing pallet stability, particularly before shrink-wrapping. Packages of varying sizes could create imbalances, complicating their movement. To overcome this, I learned to organize pallets more effectively, placing larger and heavier items first while creating a flat surface. Another challenge was managing time in the face of sometimes very high order volumes. I improved my productivity by adapting my methodology and prioritizing tasks more systematically.
Results
Improving productivity and successfully integrating into the team.
Throughout the internship, I noticed a significant improvement in my speed and efficiency in order preparation. I managed to double the number of pallets prepared per hour while maintaining a high level of accuracy. This progress contributed to a smoother flow of operations in the warehouse while enhancing my ability to work under pressure.
Lessons Learned and Skills Gained
Logistics management and teamwork.
This internship allowed me to acquire practical skills in logistics and stock management, as well as to develop a good understanding of team dynamics in an operational environment. I also learned to better manage my time and improve my personal organization in a job subject to strict deadlines. Finally, this experience strengthened my problem-solving skills and initiative-taking, while raising my awareness of the importance of safety and quality in the supply chain.
